All the young people would gather around the dish and start eating the colcannon like mad to see which of them would get the ring. Whichever of them would get the ring would be married inside of a year. There would be a great clapping and cheering when the ring would be found. I often heard my grandmother saying that Halloween was the greatest night of the year in her time.
