    From the moment they arrived in London they caused a sensation, their marvelous beauty being the theme of every tongue. Walpole one of the chroniclers of the best society says of them "the wrangling of ministries and scheming of politicians are utterly disregarded." the Miss Gunnings were the "universal theme to the exclusion even of the doings of the Dukes and Earls of society. Fancy two Irish girls of no fortune, who are declared to be the very handsomest women alive."
    Many stories are told of their first entry into society in London, a far closer preserve then that it is today wealth without lineage being very seldom successful, but some malicious person, learning their claim to connection with the Irish peerage, and knowing that a certain lady of Mayfair high in the social scale was about to give a masquerade sent them a sham card of invitation.
    The mother with true Irish intuition completely turned the tables on the enemy, by waiting on the lady of fashion armed with the sham card, and also with the company of her beautiful daughter. The lady was so impressed with the explanation, and the grace, charm and beauty of the mother, and daughter, and remembering her masque substituted a genuine card. From that forth, when they went out for a walk in the park they were followed by crowds who openly day after day expressed
