    We hadn't any shoes that time but we went to school barefooted. There was a herds house between John Waldrons house and McGloughlins that time and when we used to be going to school in snowy weather we used to run in and warm our feet. The woman of the house was a kind and generous woman and many an evening she called us in and gave us a hot dinner by the fireside.
    I attended school five years and it was me that was brokenhearted when I was told one evening that I wouldn't be let go to school any longer.
    We were taught english reading and arithmetic, catechism and prayers. We did not speak Irish at school but each boy had a stick suspended around his neck and every word of Irish he said at home there was a notch put in the stick. The teacher gave a slap
