The soldiers and police were on the watch for the robbers, and the people of the surrounding districts were in terror of them.
One night the head robber named Byrne went into a house for food. A lone woman lived in the house, she had no food, and asked the robber, whom she recognised, to mind the house, while she went to the village for food.
He agreed to do so, and told her to hurry. On her way to the village, she met some police, and she told them the robber was in her house. They went to the house and arrested the robber.
He was taken to Waterford, and was tried, and sentenced to be hanged.
On the day he was to be publicly executed, he was taken to the scaffold.
There was a large crowd round the scaffold, and the robber asked if there were people from Ballyduff present.
There were many men present, but they were afraid to admit, that they were acquainted with the robber.
