    if he could ride as well as him. Mr Connolly told him that he could ride with anyone, but he had to say that he was beaten, when the stranger jumped his horse through the fork of a tree. The stranger kept with the rest of the party until the end of the hunt. When the time came he went into the house with the rest of the guests to the feast which came after the hunt. After this feast as they were playing cards a lady dropped a card on the floor and was picking it up, when she saw that the stranger having taken off his shoes had only one foot the other being cloven. This lady fainted and the other guests looking to see what was the matter also saw the cloven foot. Mr Connolly being a Protestant called in the minister, but the Devil only laughed at him. They did not know what to do until someone said to bring in the priest, which he did. The priest came and coming into the room put some portion of his dress at each opening of the room, his hat on the chimney piece his coat on the door and his stick on the window, then he started to pray and kept on praying until the Devil said he would go. He first wanted to go through the window but if he did he would bring the wall with him. He next wanted to go up the chimney but if he did he would bring the roof with him, but the priest would only let him go down through the heartstone. So at last he said he would go that way.
