- A bundle of rushes was cut and tied together. They were then hung up to dry usually over the fire-place. When they were dried well they were taken down and peeled. A bit of butter or lard was then melted and the rushes were drawn through the melted butter or lard When this was done a rush was placed in a wooden block with a hole in it. It was then lighted and when it was burned another rush out of the bundle was selected and put in its place in the block.
