Jamie’s mother said she would die anyway for she would not eat the poor sort of food they could give her. “She is so pretty isn’t it a pity”. “it is not a bit pity” said Jamie “We will do the best we can for her.” She will be better off than to never be seen body or soul, if those (body) boys had got her,” pointing in the direction of the old castle. But the poor girl sat down on the wee creepy stool in the corner and began to cry, and the mother brought her the best clothes she had for Sunday and put them on her. When she got a mug of good tay and warmed herself at the fire she mended up. And Jamey started out early the next morning to fish and between fishing and fowling he didn’t let her want a good nourishing meal, the whole year around. Sometimes she was sad enough, but they were so kind to her she would cheer up and help the old woman to wash clothes and feed the hens. When Halloween night came again, Jamey put on his coat and started for the old castle again, sore against his mother’s will. He told her not to worry. He would be (allright) alright. When he went there; all was much the same as the last night, he was there. He listened at the window before he went in.
