capturing the priest. The people on receiving the message scattered in all directions, the priest taking shelter in a secret vault in the churchyard near by. A section of the people fled to the village of Enfield a distance of about two miles. Among those was Dan, a man a little advanced in years who found it hard to keep up with his comrades. When they came to this tree Dan decided to climb up and hide in the branches till the soldiers passed. He was not long in hiding till the soldiers passed at a furious pace. After some time Dan, thinking he was safe took out his flint and pipe to have a smoke. An officer who remained behind saw the spark from Dan's flint in the tree and thinking it was the priest who was hiding fired rapidly into the tree and poor Dan fell to the ground dead. It is freely told in the locality that from that day forward the tree decayed but the remains of the trunk can be seen there to the present day.
