“There lived two men in the one town land long ago, and the two had the same names and to distinguish them the people called one of them Great Claus and the other man Little Claus.”
(continued from previous page)the man of the house came and told Little Claus to come into the house. When the woman saw them she was mad and hid everything and she hid the man also. The farmer asked Little Claus what was in the bag he said it was a conjure. The woman presented them with a bowl of sour butter-milk and porridge. Little Claus did not eat it atall and the farmer asked if the conjure would purchase anything. Little Claus hit the conjure with his stick and it cracked.
Little Claus said "It said there is roast-meat and sweet-cake and a big bottle of whiskey upstairs". The woman brought them down and they ate and drank until they filled. Then he hit the conjure again and it said there was a man up in the chest in the room. Up they went they saw him and they then locked the chest.
The farmer started to buy the conjure from Little Claus who sold it for a bushel of money. When he was going he took the man in the chest with him and as going to it over a bridge when the man asked him not to do so and he would give him a bushel of money. He did so and when he got home he had the two bushels with him. Great Claus thought he got the two bushels for the skin. He went home and and killed his two horses and went to the town to sell them but he did not get them(continues on next page)- Collector
