- Long ago the houses were built with stones, and they were roughly plastered with mud outside.They had no chimneys, they only had a hole in the roof for the smoke to go out. The fire was in the middle of the floor.The roofs were made of tin, and the poorer people only had sticks across and sods on the top of them, and tied down with a roped.They had a bed along the wall and it was the man of the house that generally slept in it.They put holes in the walls for windows and put fine sticks into the holes to keep the wild animals out.Long ago there was a man living in Gortnabrade and every night before he would go to bed, he would go to bed he would put a great heavy bar of iron against the door.This old man was(continues on next page)
