- The wool is shorn from the sheep with shears. Then it is carefully washed and allowed to bleach. This bleaching is to whiten it. when it is thoroughly dried it is teased by hand. This teasing helps separate the different strands. It is then carded to separate it still more. The cards are like hair brushes with fine steel wires instead of hair. This carding increases the bulk of wool and makes it very soft and silky. This wool is then dyed in different colours and then spun into yarn on a spinning wheel. The person who is spinning works the treadle with her foot and feeds the wool to the wheel by hand like a man making straw ropes for thatching. The yarn is made up into hanks, cuts, or skeens. It is then used either for knitting purposes or sent to a weaver who makes it into blankets(continues on next page)
