- Long ago, the people had no lights neither gas lights nor Electric lights.
They tried in different ways, so at last they made light, called tallow candles.
This is how they made cheaply. When they killed a cow they got tallow off the cow. they put it into the pot, and then they set the pot on the fire to melt the tallow.
They made a long rod. and hung a good many of wicks on it, and then they diped these wicks into the pot of melted tallow and the tallow sticks on to the wicks and then it was allowed to cool.
They had to dip the wicks into the melted tallow five or six times so that the candles were the same thickness as an ordinary candle.
