- Local RuinsThere are two old ruins in the school district viz, Balleighan Abbey and Ballylawn Castle.Ballylawn Castle is in the townland of Ballylawn.It is almost a century in ruins. It is ivy-covered now, and some of it is towering into the sky.It was the residence of Lord Londonderry and also of his ancestors for centuries before. He was the owner of the aria around Ballylawn Castle. He is also the patron of Balleighan School.It was never besieged nor burned. It has no dungeon because it was only a private residence.Balleighan Abbey was founded in the sixteenth century by Black Hugh O'Donnell.It is also in ruins. It was used by the Franciscan Monks.The old people say that there was a man living beside the Abbey plot. He wanted a great quantity(continues on next page)
