- According to accounts from the people of to day bread was made in many different kinds and ways, namely wheaten and oat-bread which was baked with water and baked in front of the fire. Bread was also made from potatoes and wheat. Oat bread was made with boiling water and baked up in a big square and stood against a griddle in front of an open hearth fire. Wheaten bread was baked with buttermilk and cooked on top of the fire on a pan. These pans or griddles were made from iron.
