- The Famine began in the year 1846 owing to the failure of the potatoe crop. The blight or rot attacked the potatoe stalks early in July of that year and in one night they were all gone. But the real Famine began in the year 48 and it continued for many years. After-wards the potatoe in Ireland was then the Staple food of the majority of the people.
