    to the mouth of the well. She tied him to a long rope and let him down. At the bottom of the well sure enough he found the blue light. He gave her a signal to pull him up, and when she pulled him up so near to the top that she could reach him with her hand she said, "give me the light, I will take care of it myself." At the same time she meant to play a trick on him by taking it herself and letting him fall again to the bottom of the well.
    But the man knew what the old witch meant to do. He told her he would not give her the light until he would find himself at the top of the well. At this the witch became very angry and dashed him, along with the light, to the bottom of the well.
    The man lay at the bottom of the well for a while in despair, not knowing what was going to become of him. Thinking his end was at hand he took out his
