for which the traveller "stood" drinks 30 leor.On another occasion he appeared before the magistrates of Carndonagh court charge with being drunk. It should be mentioned here that policemen who had spent some time in the locality and who got to know John and the acidity of his tongue never ventured to arrest him. On this occasion he was taken by two men who were new to the district. Sgt. Rue and Constable Burke.
When the case was over the magistrates asked McDaid if he had anything to say (I imagine they put this question not so much as a formality as in the hope of hearing something good from McDaid)
Turning to the policemen concerned he said
"Who are you sweet Sgt Rue
That swore so much by random
And this other Turk they call him Burke
