- In the years 1846 and '47 the farmers of Ireland had no potatoes. The blight destroyed the potatoes and then people had to sell their corn to pay the high rents to the landlords. People more comfortable than others set up what was called "stirabout houses". The stirabout was made very solid and could be cut in squares and sold to people who walked miles for it.
