    with the old people, and is at the present time, to tell stories by the fire-side to pass the night away. Nearly every old person has an old story to tell. I have only heard a few of those stories, and I shall try and tell one of them as best as I can.
    One day, a certain woman left her daughter to cook the dinner for her while she would be hearing Mass. The mother put on a huge fire, and she put the pot on it. All the girl had to do was to watch and not to let it boil over on the fire.
    The dinner consisted of turnips, a calf's head, and oat-meal boiled with them in cold water, and was called "dumplings". The woman went to Mass delighted with herself, thinking in her own mind that the dinner would be cooked for
