- Long ago the people wore no shoes until they were fourteen years. When they would be going to Mass they would bring them under their arms, and put them on coming near the Chapel. If they were going to town they would put them on coming near town. Boots were then far cheaper than they are now, and they lasted longer for people took great care of them. Repairs were always done at home. The man of the house or the grown up boys could do all the repairs needed. Boots were never taken to the cobbler to be mended.
