- (continued from previous page)It was a mark of superiority in the district to get what they called a "great swell. No one dreamed of getting married at any other time of the year save Shrove. Shrove Tuesday or as they called it the Last Day generally had a goodly number of marriages.
Every house kept a goose for a wedding in the village and if there was more than one marriage expected more than one goose was kept. If the weddings did not come off the geese were killed for Shrove Tuesday night and the neighbours who had no geese were made welcome to a royal lnight.(continues on next page)
