    I once bought a calf from a Kerry man and he refused to give 1d for luck and the calf died. He often calls me to buy from him but I always retort with the dead calf.
    1/- is the luck penny on a sheep. When making bargains they are striking hands and asking will you give them?
    When the bargain is made they mark the animals by putting their shoe up on the hip of a small animal or by putting the mud of the road up on the animal with their sticks. Nowadays some carry a ball of blue or raddle with which they mark the animals while others put a mark on with a scissors.
    Every buyer has a certain mark and puts his mark in the same place so that he always recognises what he has bought.
    When a horse is sold a halter is always given with the horse
