Long ago when the English were in Ireland the priests were not allowed to say mass in the public at all. There was a young priest around this district and the English were after his heels every he would go. He had a little house in the middle of a big bog in which he used to say mass. Lots of people used to come to his house to hear him preaching. One day as he was in the middle of the mass he heard the soldiers coming. Before he was able to finish the mass he had to go away. When the came to the little house they broke it down and burned everything that was in it. Other priests used to have no huts at all only say the mass in the open. They used to get food and lodgens in the farmers houses. If any priest was caught by the English his head would be cut of and placed on a gate.(continues on next page)- Collector
