“Long ago a man by the name of Thomas Daly was cutting hay in a meadow near Caherdown.”
Long ago a man by the name of Thomas Daly was cutting hay in a meadow near Caherdown. It was coming near dinner time when a big man dressed in white came down the meadow towards him. He was going to come home because he could not keep the scythe edged and each time he would edge it it would come twice thicker. He was very downhearted and he was drowned with sweat because he could not mow. The man said to him "Why are you not working?" Then Daly said to him his scythe would not mow for him because he cut a black hare with it in the leg and the hare turned into a woman and she said a few words over the scythe. The man said, why did he not kill the hare because she was a bad witch. The man then gave him a thing to put on the scythe but if anyone came and asked him to show the scythe, not to give it to them. He started to mow again and this time the scythe mowed gallantly. After that a small man came down the field and asked him to show him the fine scythe, and he refused.
