    other Irish Franciscan monasteries of the period.
    Sir Richard Bingham who was Governor of Connacht towards the close of the 16th century and whose brutal treatment of our people shocked even Queen Elizabeth herself acted kindly enough towards the friars of Kilconnell. In 1596 however, Clifford used the monastery as a barrack for some of his English troops after they had been defeated in various engagements by O'Donnell and O'Neill. On this occasion an officer stabled his horse within the very chancel and close to the foot of St. Francis altar and the next morning he was found stark dead. The same year a kindly English officer
