- Seventy years ago there was an old school in Gortletteragh. It was situated in a bog lane. It was an old thatched house with a clay floor there were no seats in it but a few stools. A lot of children attended it, they had (seats) slates and slate pencils the pens they had were quills. The teacher was Mrs Browne who was paid a salary. She was a native of the district she taught for thirty years in the old school. When the children came home they learned their lessons by rush candles which they made themselves. Some sat around the fire and learned them by it.
