- Mermaids:-
Continuing my folklore talks with James Mc Dowell. He says about fifty years ago he was going to Poogue's Newtowngore about 10 pm one summer's night. He decided to go to it by Garadice lake. When opposite Mrs Quinns point in the lake at Carrickmakeegan he saw a girl sitting on a battery used by fishermen. He bid her good night but got no reply. He stood for a moment to make sure if he knew her. She was now pointing with her hands out the lake. He could see the lower part of her body was covered with water. Suddenly she dived into the lake and vanished. Next day the brother Cullanes were drowned in the very spot the mermaid pointed to.
The brother Cullanes lived where Mrs Quinn Carrickmakeegan is living now. One day they were out in a boat for a sail. The boat was leaking and it was going down. One of the old Quinn men shouted to them to hold on to the boat but they did not hear him and they went down. When they were found they had their hands around the other's neck.Goodpeople:-
