- 1 The elves or fairies are supposed to hit a cow with their magic stones, and the cow gets sick. The owner therefore tries to get those magic stones. He goes to a place where "three waters meet", called the "three mearing water" and brings home some of it
He puts silver and elf-stones into this water, and gives it to the cow to drink.
The people believe that this treatment cures the cow and I've seen cases where the animal recovered.2 Blue stone and tar is supposed to be good for a Sheep's rotting foot.
3 Any animal with a sore foot is supposed to be cured by an application of boiled turnips4 A "Briar" whose two ends are in the ground will cure a calf suffering form worms, if the briar be put round him.5 A horse having sore legs will be cured by bathing in "Mustard water."
