- Years ago run away marriages were the order in this district. When a boy and girl made up their minds to get married, and their parents were against it, they, with bride's maid and groom's man, went to the church some evening without anybody knowing it and were married in the parish church. Then the parents on both sides had to put up with it as best they could. Then again matches were often made in home of intended bride when she, unknown to anyone in house, ran off with her lover who took her to some friend's house and kept her there for the night. This was considered such a discrace that her parents were not only willing but glad to give her to her lover. Oftentimes girls were taken against their will. The man in this case, accompanied by some of his friends, waited night after night for a favourable opportunity and carried off, much against her will, some girl that attracted him.
