    was called a gad. There was a ring made in a rope and put in on the stick. The other end was tied around the cow's neck. When there was a ring in the rope it was able to run up and down the stick according as the cow raised and lowered her head.
    Some people hand palm in the cowhouse to bring luck on the stock.
    Before milking, the first drops are milked on the ground. The old people say that this is to give the first drops to the fairies in order that they will not take the rest of the milk. It is done now to clean any dirt or dust that might be in the teats. Most people when they have finished milking dip their thumb in the frost and put the sign of the cross on the cow.

    The master told us to write here that upwards of thirty years ago elf shot in cows was very prevalent in this district.
