“There was once a woman in Cloonaughill Co Sligo and her husband was dead.”
There was once a woman in Cloonaughill Co Sligo and her husband was dead. One night she heard a noise at the window. She got afraid but at last she said, "Who is there?" A voice said, "Your own poor John." The woman asked him what was he doing there. John answered her and said "I cannot go to rest until I pay a debt of £10. The woman said, "I have not £10 for you now but if you come some other night I will have it for you." The next night he came again and knocked at the window. The woman got up and let the man in; she gave him the £10. Then he said, "I want to kiss the children." So when the man was going out a Guard caught hold of him and said, "Have you changed much in the next world?" The Guard took the disguide off him and it was a next-door neighbour.- Collector
