- (continued from previous page)numerous as they are presently. Most of the children used to have to go miles and miles before they would reach a school. It was in old unused houses that the teacher used to teach the children long ago, and also around the hedges and bushes. The fathers and mothers of the children used to give them a little money to give to the teacher. They used to teach English and some Irish to the children. It was on the blackboard that the children used to do all their sums, and learn how to write. The children used to do some work on a slate. Arithmetic and reading was all that was mostly taught.
- There were a large number of old schools and hedge schools long ago in our district. There is one old hedge school at Geevagh. There is another at the school in Glan, and another at Conway's old house.(continues on next page)
