    They procured the
    Purificator, the cock and the rod.
    The treasure was supposed to
    be hidden at a point equi-distant
    from three hawthorn bushes growing
    on the hill.
    The men were to dig
    at this point. The cock would crow
    when they came to the flag which
    covered the treasure, the eel would
    then make its appearance, run
    towards the Purificator, go through
    it three times and die when
    struck by the rod.
    The soldier
    made all arrangements to
    commence digging on the
    following night.
    Meantime
    he got a sudden message
    to join his regiment and
    had to return to England. He
    promised to return but never
    did. It was supposed he was
