O'Donnell in Ballymote slew a bishop named Eugene O Hegan, who fought with the rebels with breviary in one hand and sword in the other.The Castle of Ballymote was built about the year 1300 by Richard de Burgo "the Red Earl of Ulster." Years later it was occupied by Turlough O'Connor, King of Connaught, the MacDonagh and Red Hugh O'Donnell. After O'Donnell it fell into Captain Taafe's hands. In 1641 the Irish captured the Castle but after several attempts it was recaptured in 1652 by the united forces of General Ireton and Sir Charles Coote.This ancient castle which occupies a considerable area of ground is flanked with six imposing towers and even in its ruined state will give the visitor an idea of its former strength.
