- Long ago shops were very scarce, but they increased and in the remotest parts of Ireland shops are to be found. The market and fairs were held at the crossroads long ago, and people came selling stuff at these crossroads, and when they did good business they put up shops at these places and in this way towns were started.In some places in Ireland fairs are still held at crossroads, such as Molahiffe fair and Currans fair. Both those places are places where three or four roads cross, and in these places fairs are held once a year. Luck money was always given when anything was sold and egg-money was usually part of the price of every animal if possible as it was considered lucky
