- (continued from previous page)was seen to be in distress. Some sailors of the neighbourhood perceived it and immediately went to its aid. But their boat was only a little way off when they bethought themselves of pirates, and not recognising the craft, they led the ship away from the shore on to rocks nearby. When the pirate ship discovered this, they commenced firing at the Irish boat, but the sailors out of the range of the guns escaped. Some of the pirates who survived the wreck succeded in reaching land near Castlegregory. After a while, they promised the natives a store of gold if they would salvage the ship with them. Some accepted the offer and received their payment. Their boat was loaded with gold but before they reached the shore, the boat sank under the abnormal load. Later, divers were sent in search of it, but, found it guarded by a huge serpent. The people of the Maharees(continues on next page)
