    Once upon a time there lived in Ballyfereter a man called Lord Fereter and another man called Thomás Roe O Sullivan who was known later as Professor O Sulluvan in Derrynane Abbey. In the invasion of Cromwell he volunteered under the command of Lord Fereter who marched to Tralee against Cromwell to defend his church and country; being defeated Thomás made his escape. Lord Fereter was captured and hanged with the Bishop of Kerry at Martyrs' hill now where stands the friars' Chapel in Killarney Thomás was still at large with one thousand pounds of a reward for his capture dead or alive but that did not frighten Thomás. He went to Derrynane Abbey and took from there books to teach by the hedge he sent an account to Muckross Abbey in Killarney that the soldiers were on their way to there. They thought to escape with all that belonged to the altar in an island on the lake but on their return they were captured in the bank by soldiers who hanged those friars to the nearest tree. Thomás was still at large teaching until one day he was told that the soldiers were coming that way he packed up his books and sent them across the bay to Dingle but the boat went down.
