    Neither had they pens in those days. They used to write with pencils on slate. The scholars were seated and arranged on rocks of stone listening attentively to the teacher's instruction.
    Each scholar brought a sod of turf every morning to make a fire to keep themselves warm. Boys and girls were taught in the same school.
    The grown-up boys who were anxious to get a situation were taught in the evenings.
