  1. The August fair of Monaghan was known as the "Gooseberry" fair. Gooseberries were sold on standings on the street.

    Fosterage as a custom is still practiced in this district.

    The market on the Monday before Christmas in Monaghan was called the "Margadh More".

    Hiring was done only on the May and November fair days and the term was for 6 months. "Earnest" was given to the hired worker as a pledge of the bargain. If the "earnest" was returned it meant the hired worker would not come to work. The "earnest" was generally half a crown or five shillings.
