  1. When Mr A. Wilkinson was a boy, he often spent his time making rush candles.
    He gathered the rushes, cutting them in equal lengths, about 8 inches long. The outside was stripped off the rushes, which were then only as thick as a thread.
    These were dipped in grease of any kind, either dripping or tallow. These were placed in tall candle sticks, about three feet high. The tops were lighted and burned with a clear light.
