- Travelling people still call at houses in our district. They have been doing so for many years. They are not very poor. They sell tin cans and other articles made from tin, which they make themselves. The people buy from them. Most people do not welcome them. These people are known as gipsies or travelling tinkers in our district. They travel in caravans and camp over night on the road, sometimes they stay longer than a night if they are not "caught" by the "Garda". They take food with them in the waggons. These folk accept clothing, money, and food. They travel in families. The names of the best known gipsies in our district are the Cooneys, Cauleys and O'Dohertys. These three families visit our district most frequently. They do not come at any special time except on a fair day. They do not tell stories, some of them tell fortunes.
