    The dark eyed proud Maureen.
    Whom he hopes some day will bless his home
    In the woods of Truagh so green.
    To night I come to see you love,
    And hear your answer sweet.
    For I may in the battle fall
    And never more we'll meet.
    "Go forth, go forth, my blessing go
    And smile the Saxon hordes.
    When you return, I'll be your bride
    Without another word."
    He pressed her to his yellow locks,
    As the sun was sinking down.
    Behind yon western wooded hills.
    That o'erlook Glasslough town.
    McKenna lightly mounts his steed,
    At the twilight of the eve,
    And out thro Davagh hills he fled,
    And the woods of Truagh so green.
