- (continued from previous page)A very rudely carved stone lies outside the ruins and has the following inscribed -
HERE LYETH THE BODY
of JAMES HUGHES and [WIFE]
who departed [THR LIFS]
WAN IN YEAR OF 1723
OTHER IN 1739
[HIS POSTARTYS].
There is a stone cross erected in 1878 by Mrs. Bridget Kelly, 5 Dean St. Dublin with the following inscription, "Burial place of the McGowans of Ballycannon. From the year 1450.
The oldest tombs which I saw were dated - 1736, 1741, 1762, 1771.
Graveyard is still used but not very much.
There is a well in Killeighter church yard which cures sore eyes and there is a tree growing beside it and each person that goes there and gets cured sticks a pin into it. This graveyard is disused but my Mother remembers Mrs. Gilligan from Cappagh being buried in it. Some of the tombs in each of these are ornamented with a dove or a little cross.- Collector
