The esate on which the monaster is bilt was given to Adam Hereford by Strongbown. He gave it to the monks of St. Victor who called it St. Wolstans after one of their abbots who was martyred by the Danesw. It was suppressed at the time of the Reformation by King Henry the 8th and given to Sir John Allen. The last of the Alens lost it for fighting against the English at the battle of Fontenoy. The monaster was then turned into a school but was shut down owing to a fracas between the pupils and the townspeople in which some of the pupils were killed.
