- (continued from previous page)A faction fight at a Regatta
In the year 1839 about a a hundred years ago a boat race was held at Fiddown. It was held every year. It was stopped on the year mentioned owning to a faction fight between two parties know as the Shea’s and the Holden’s. It was said that one of each party was first cousins. They agreed to a wrestling match. They got ready and went into the field opposite the coal-yard. They stated and it was agreed not to trip. All the people numbering about one thousand from Co. Waterford, Tipperary and Kilkenny came to see the boat-race. After about ten minutes twisting and turning the man of the Shea’s tripped his opponent with the result that one of the spectators on Holden’s side struck the Shea’s wrestler with a stick. Another of the crowd struck him and the result was that the two different supports of each party attacked one another. The crowd that had no side to back had to fight for themselves, also. The police were called from PIltown. They fought for hours. There was no one killed only about twenty badly injured. The faction parties could be(continues on next page)- Collector
