    the young shoots are cut into a wooden trough, which has a stong bottom, and is raised about a foot from the ground: in this they are pounded with a mallet, which has a head from sixteen to eighteen inches long, the broader end being about six or seven inches diameter, from whence it tapers gently to the other: the large end is bound with an iron rim, and armed with two blades, sunk deep into the wood, crossing each other in the centre and projecting from one inch to one and a half the handle is from three and a half to four feet long fixed much nearer to the small than the large end of the head; with this a man can chop or pound enough for eight horses in a day if the furze are cut for him; or can cut and pound alone for four
