  1. The strongest man that ever lived in this locality is Patrick Meaney, Ballnabarna, Inistioge. He could lift two sacks of barley each weighing three hundred weight. He could straighten his two arms under two fair sized men. He was once in a yard where there was a threshing engine. There were ten men pushing the drum. and they failed. He himself pushed it about fifty yards with the help of only one man who was not pushing but steering it. He was one day walking along the road chatting to two strong men. To confirm his story he gave them a small tap of his thumb and they both fell into the ditch. Once he was loading sacks of barley and he put them into the cart by himself which would take three good men. Another day he struck an ass. The blow killed the ass. He was able to carry a roller 5 cwt weight on his shoulder.
    Great Swimmers
Patrick Ryan, Old Court, Inistioge, could swim from one bank of the river Nore to the other. He won many prizes in Thomastown and he saved many lives.
