- (continued from previous page)to the meat. This was called Potatoes and point. Pepper and salt mixed were very much used to dip the potatoes in, and was called "cocktail". Fish was considered almost a rarity too. There is a story told of a poor man and his son being working hard out in the field. The bean a' tíge had a herring for dinner ready and she warned the little boy to "dip in the dippy boy and leave the herring to dad". After the famine the people had stirrabout made from maize meal for breakfast and supper and potatoes for dinner. It was often taken out to the field for the breakfast. It was taken out in the field to the men, and spoons standing up in it - one spoon for each man. This was taken with milk.
It is now almost a hundred years since tea was first used in the district. At first it was considered a great rarity, and used only at Xmas and Easter. People had very queer ideas of how it should be used when it first came to be used.Mathew O'Rourke told the following story about tea when it first came to be used
