- (continued from previous page)claims the privilege for himself and his heirs for ever of presenting one monk who could speak English to the abbey of Duiske. Since the Duiske monks came from Stanley in Wiltshire and must have been English speaking, it looks as if Adam foresaw that the Irish would evenually predominate in Duiske.In 1475 Daniel Reagh Kavanagh, lord of all Leinster, granted eight pence annually from every plough in his territory to the abbey of Duiske. His son, Charles was the last abbot of Duiske. In 1501 Charles Kavanagh was elected abbot. He was an outstanding scholar and on account of his learning and virtue was consecrated bishop of Leighlin and abbot of Graig. He died in the year 1550 and was a hundred years old.In 1513 Abbot Kavanagh directed one of his monks to compile the annals of Ireland. This book was known as the "Annals of Duiske" or "The Ancient Book of Graig" but it was lost.(continues on next page)
