- The famine was in the years 1845, '46, '47. It was caused by the failure of the potato crop.
There were twice as much people and houses in Tullaroan at that time.
There are the ruins of four houses still to be seen in Gaulstown. They belonged to Sweeney's, Henley's, Flood's, and one at Ballinamarra Cross Road's belonged to Kennedy's.
There used a load of yellow meal come to Ballinamarra twice a week. My great grandfather used to go down, and give some to the women according to the family she would have.
They used to eat raw turnips and yellow meal porridge.- Collector
